A Faithful History...

Founded in 1849, First Presbyterian Church held its early worship services in a log building located on the site of the present-day Valley Street Cemetery.  The church originally had only fifteen members, but the faith and dedication of those members was so great that the church was able to make a substantial positive impact on the community.  Within fifty years, membership had grown to the point that the congregation began worshiping in a wood-frame church on High Street.  During those years on High Street, the church continued reaching people for Christ, providing not only worship services, but also education opportunities, children's programs, and leadership in community affairs.  As the church served the community, it continued to grow.  By the late 1950's membership had expanded to nearly 500, which necessitated another move.  A site was secured on Edgewood Drive, and in 1959, a dedication ceremony was held for our present church building.

Since relocating to our Edgewood Drive location, we Presbyterians have remained committed to sharing God's love with our community.  We remain a congregation in which thinking people can worship and learn about God.  We enthusiastically teach the Christian values of love, compassion, and personal responsibility.  Our mission activity eases the suffering and meets the needs of many individuals and families, both locally and around the world.  And, as is typical of Presbyterians wherever they go, we provide leadership to our community in a wide variety of settings, both public and private, both religious and secular.  Although our journey through time has not always been easy, our story is overwhelmingly one of love, dedication, service and faith.  With God's help, we Presbyterians have played a very significant and valuable role in the life of our community.  With God's help we will continue to do so.
